Crown Prince Haakon was
born in Oslo's Rikshospitalet on July 20th, 1973 as the second child of the present King
(Harald) and Queen (Sonja).
Haakon has one sister, Märtha Louise who was born on September 22nd, 1971. The young prince was christened Haakon Magnus on September 20th of the same year.
The crown prince was educated at a local
kindergarten and primary school in Skaugum. He graduated from Oslo's Kristelig Gymnasium
in 1992.
Haakon was trained as a navy officer in Stavanger, Horten and Bergen. He served half a
year as a naval officer on a missile torpedo boat and another half year on another ship.
In 1994 he started studying political science at Berkeley University in California, which he finished with a bachelor's degree in 1999. He also studied Law and Social Science at Oslo University.
In 1999 he met Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby, a single mother from Kristiansand. The couple met at a rock festival in her home town.
In May 2000, the Prince declared his love for Mette-Marit in a television interview. A few months later the couple went living together in a new Oslo appartment.
On December 1st, 2000 the engagement was made official; the couple was married on August 25th, 2001.
