Haakon and Mette-Marit engaged

The happy couple: Crown Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit Tjessem-HoibyDecember 1st, 2000 - Crown Prince Haakon of Norway and Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby are engaged.

The engagement was announced by King Harald today. At 15.00u the couple held a press conference at the Royal Palace in Oslo, where the Crown Prince announced the wedding date has been set for August 25th, 2001.

The relationship of the Crown Prince and Mette-Marit has been controversal. Mette-Marit (27) is a young mother, who's former partner (and father of her three year old son) has been convicted of drugsdealing. Crown Prince Haakon himself announced his relationship in last May, in a television interview. Mette-Marit and Marius moved in with Haakon last October, when Haakon bought a new appartment in the centre of Oslo.

Haakon presented his bride-to-be with a historic engagement ring, that belonged to Princess Märtha, and had also been given to Queen Sonja by King Harald on the occasion of their engagement.

Norway has reacted positive to the engagement, according to several polls.
