Elisabeth, daugther of Filip and Mathilde

October 25th, 2001 - A happy Prince Filip announced the birth of his daughter Elisabeth, born at Erasmus Hospital in Anderlecht at 21.58u.

Proud father Filip at the press conferencePrincess Mathilde gave birth by caesarian section, due to a breech position and ombilical cord that was wrapped around the neck. Elisabeth was given the full name of Elisabeth Thérèse Marie Hélène.

The little princess is almost 50 cm long and 2.950 kg. She was born almost three weeks ahead of her due date. She was delivered by doctor Genevieve Naomé and her team, who according to the proud father, did a great job.

Prince Filip gave a press conference at 01.30u together with doctor Naomé and doctor Simons. Filip confessed he was 'not nervous at all', ' hoped his daughter looked like him' and that  'he was a little late, because he had to give his daughter her first bath'.

The next morning the new princess was visited by her grandparents and her aunts, Mathilde's sisters Elisabeth and Hélène. For Mathilde's parents, the new princess is their first grandchild. King Albert and Queen Paola already have four grandchildren, all from Princess Astrid and her husband Prince Mathilde shortly before the birthLorenz.

Elisabeth's godparents are Mathilde's sister Hélène d'Udekem d'Acoz and Princess Astrid's son Prince Amedeo of Belgium and Austria-Este.

In honour of Princess Elisabeth's birth, 101 gunshots were fired at the Warande park in Brussel. Elisabeth will be the first female heir to the throne of Belgium. As of 1991 it is possible for female's to inheret the throne. It is now the first born who will be heir, irrelevant of male/female.

The princess will be shown to the public on Sunday.
