Princess Marilène of Orange -
Nassau
Princess
Marilène was born on February 4th, 1970 in Dieren, The Netherlands as Marie-Helène
Angela van den Broek. She is the youngest daughter of European Commissionar Hans van den
Broek and his wife Josée. Marilène has one older sister, Caroline.
Marilène went to elementary school in Velp, followed her VWO gymnasium first in Arnhem
and later at the Rijnlands Lyceum in Wassenaar, because her father became minister of
foreign affairs. She graduated in 1988. The same year Marilène started studying business
administration in Groningen and started specializing in marketing. She frequently worked
at Café Soestdijk where she met Prince Maurits, and was also a member of Vindicat, a
studentcorps. Marilène obtained her degree in 1994 after spending half a year in Leuven
in 1993 to study.
After obtaining her degree, she started working as a marketing specialist for the
Koninklijke Ahold NV. On november 29th, 1997 she and prince Maurits announced their
engagement and were married on May 29th and May 30th, 1998. The young couple asked for
parliamentary concent and since her marriage Marilène van den Broek is styled as Her
Highness Princess
Marilène of Oranje-Nassau, Van Vollenhoven Van den Broek. Marilène will keep on working.
The Princess enjoys sports, especially tennis, speed skating and running. It is said that
she was the better one, when Marilène and Maurits competed in the New York Marathon.
The Princess and her husband have one child: Anastasia
