Princess Mathilde of Belgium
Princess Mathilde of Belgium was born on January 20th, 1973 in Ukkel, Belgium
as Mathilde Marie Christine Ghislaine d'Udekem d'Acoz. She is the oldest of the five
children of Patrick d'Udekem d'Acoz and Countess Anne Marie Komorowski.
Mathilde has three sisters and one brother: Marie-Alix was born in 1974, Elisabeth in
1977, Helene in 1979 and Charles-Henri in 1985.
As a young girl she spent her childhood at the castle of
Losange, Villers-la-Bonne-Eau, Bastogne (in Flemish Bastenaken).
After graduation Mathilde started studying speech therapy at the famous institute of
Marie-Haps.
She graduated, started her own practice in Brussels at the Brand Witlocklaan. She also
worked at a school as a speech therapist. She also studied psychology but has not finished
yet.
Mathilde is known for her smile and for being very religious. She used to be a member of
the Order of Malta. She also likes to travel a lot.
On August 14th, 1997 her sister Marie-Alix and her grandmother, princess Sophie Sapieha
died in a car crash at Herstal (near Liège), Belgium. Mathilde had already met Prince
Filip. Their relationship deepend after the death of Mathilde's sister.
On September 10th, 1999 the engagement was made official by the prime minister of Belgium:
Guy Verhofstadt. The couple got married on December 4th of the same year.
Mathilde is expecting her first child for mid november 2001. |
