Prince Filip of Belgium
Prince Filip Leopold Louis Marie was born on April, 15th of 1960 as
the oldest child of the princes of Luik (Liège) - Prince Albert and Princess Paola (born
Paola Ruffo di Calabria).
Prince Filip has one sister and one brother: Princess Astrid, born in 1962 and married to
Archduke Lorenz of Austria, and prince Laurent, born in 1963.
He never knew his grandmother, the legendary Queen Astrid, who was killed in August 1935.
After graduating Filip became para-commando and fighter-pilot. He flew a Mirage. He also
graduated from Standford where he studied political science.
When King Boudewijn died on July 31st, 1993 everyone thought Filip would be the next king,
but instead his father, Albert, became king. Filip's life however changed.
In 1996 Filip met young Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz. After the death of her sister, Filip
made more visits to the castle of Losange in Bastogne to help her overcome this tragedy.
On September 10th, 1999 the couple got engaged. They were married on December 4th, 1999 in
the Saint Michiels and Saint Goedele Cathedral in Brussels.
The young couple lives at Laeken.
